I anledning Forskningsdagene på Lillehammer 2013 hadde undertegnede et kort foredrag om Vann som politikk, i anledning av at årets tema var Vann. Jeg valgte å vinkle det på vannknapphet og hvordan elver som deles av flere stater kan lede til konflikt eller samarbeid.

Denne listen inneholder en del av ressursene jeg brukte som bakgrunnsresearch for presentasjonen og en del jeg tilfeldig er kommet over etterpå. Sikkert langt fra fullstendig, men kan sikkert også være nyttig for andre som er interessert i temaet.
Nå som OL starter er det verdt å minne
om at sport er høyst relevant i studiet av internasjonale relasjoner. Sportsdiplomati har både sine talsmenn (Goldberg 2000) og kritikere (Rubin 2014). Det kan være grunnlag for mellomstatlig diplomati (Griffin 2014) jfr. ping-pong diplomatiet mellom USA og Kina. Du kan også lese et intervju med Griffin her - eller se ham i YouTube-videoen under.
Selvsagt er sport også et instrument for staters propaganda innad og offentlig diplomati utad. En klassiker er naziregimets OL i Berlin i 1936. Afro-amerikaneren Jesse Owens' fire gull i friidrett bidro imidlertid til å reverse en del av effekten. Se videoen under om Jesse Owens og Berlin OL i 1936.
I hvert fall i ett ekstremt tilfelle har sport (fotball) til og med vært utløsende årsak til krig (Veytskin et al., 2013). Se videoen under om fotballkrigen mellom Honduras og El Salvador.
Kathryn Bigelow's film Dark Zero Thirty about the hunt for Osama bin Laden triggered a debate on its framing of torture as an interrogation tool. This debate also linked to the wider debate on torture (or "enhanced interrogation techniques") and the relationship between the entertainment business in Hollywood and the security establishment in Pentagon and the CIA. The articles listed below is collected to give an overview of the debate - and provide material for a case study in an upcoming course in Media and Politics at Lillehammer University and a chapter for a book in Media Pedagogy.

Cappelen Akademisk released a book on International Relations in 2010, co-written with Ole Gunnar Austvik and Heidrun Sørlie Røhr. In Norwegian only, sorry about that. It has been reviewed well and sold well and is already in its first reprint after a year. The reviewer in the leading Norwegian journal for international relations (Internasjonal politikk) concluded a long and positive review with what can be translated as:

The book may be even more useful for more experienced students wondering about what texts to read to write a good paper for their Bachelor degree. En akkurat passe lang introduksjon til Internasjonale relasjoner is a good place to start the search.
The book focuses on four aspects of IR; International Politics, International Political Economy, Global communication and culture, as well as War, conflicts and conflict resolution. It dedicates a chapter to each of the subjects, following an introductory chapter. You can watch a playlist containing slides from each chapter below.
As most should know by now, Joseph Kony is the infamous leader of the guerilla group the Lord's
Resistance Army, which have fought the authorities of Uganda for many years.
In 2005 the International Criminal Court charged Kony and some of his accomplices for their attrocities. Planning to use KONY2012 as a case study for my course in Media and Politics later this year, I started collecting material, and might as well share some of it. Those unfamiliar with Kony may for instance read:
Despite the ICC-charge and US support to search for Kony, he is still at large, probably somewhere in East Congo. When the NGO Invisible Children started their campaign KONY2012 to mobilize political pressure to seize Kony, their 29 minute video
distributed on YouTube and Vimeo was an overnight sensation, as it became truly viral, thanks to sharing via social media.
There has also been a lot of reactions against both the campaign and the video. Not because there is any sympathy with Kony, but because there are doubts about the motives and transparency of the NGO itself, that the video is too simplistic in its storytelling, is a product of the "white man's burden" type of thinking and so on. Some of the articles are collected in the list below. Possibly the best of the lot is the posting of Ethan Zuckerman on his blog (at the bottom of the list).
The Guardian did interviews with a few children/youths who belonged to the group that watched the Invisible Children video. Here's what they had to say:
